How to cancel Slack
Last reviewed About 2–5 minutes
Canceling a paid Slack plan works by downgrading your workspace to the free tier — only workspace owners or admins can complete this step. You choose whether the downgrade takes effect immediately or at your next renewal date. The free Slack plan has limits on message history, file storage, and the number of app integrations, so review these before proceeding.
Any unused portion of a paid plan may generate Slack credits, but these credits have no cash value and expire when your paid plan ends.
Steps
Open Admin from the desktop app
In the Slack desktop app, click 'Admin' in the left sidebar. If Admin is not visible, click your workspace name to locate it.
Select Manage billing
Click 'Manage billing' from the Admin menu.
Click Change plan details
On the Overview tab, select 'Change plan details'.
Select Downgrade to Free
Choose 'Downgrade to Free'. Select whether the change takes effect immediately or at your next renewal date.
Continue to Checkout and confirm
Click 'Continue to Checkout', review the downgrade details, then click 'Downgrade Slack' to finalize.

Frequently asked questions
- Can I cancel Slack from the mobile app?
- No. Billing management for Slack is only available from the desktop app. Open Slack on a computer, then navigate to Admin > Manage billing to downgrade your plan.
- Can I choose when the Slack downgrade takes effect?
- Yes. During the downgrade flow you choose whether the change takes effect immediately or at your next renewal date. Choosing your renewal date keeps your current plan active through the period you have already paid for.
- What happens to my Slack message history when I downgrade?
- The free Slack plan applies a message history limit. Messages beyond that limit are no longer accessible in the interface but are not permanently deleted — they become visible again if you upgrade to a paid plan in the future.
