How to cancel GitHub Copilot

GitHub Copilot subscriptions for individual accounts are canceled through your GitHub account settings. After canceling, you keep access to your current Copilot features until your billing cycle ends, then your account is automatically downgraded to Copilot Free.

If you access Copilot through an organization or enterprise plan, you cannot cancel the subscription yourself — contact your organization admin. Students, teachers, and qualifying open-source maintainers with complimentary access also cannot self-cancel.

Steps

Open your GitHub account Settings
Click your profile picture in the upper-right corner of GitHub.com, then select 'Settings' from the dropdown.
Go to Billing & licensing
In the 'Access' section of the Settings sidebar, click 'Billing & licensing', then navigate to 'Licensing' (on the new billing platform) or 'Plans and usage' (on the original platform).
Select Manage subscription in the Copilot section
In the GitHub Copilot section, open the 'Manage subscription' dropdown.
Click Cancel subscription
Select 'Cancel subscription' from the dropdown.
Confirm cancellation
Confirm by clicking 'Cancel Copilot Pro', 'Cancel Copilot Pro+', or 'Cancel Copilot Max' depending on your current plan. Your paid access continues through the end of your billing cycle.

Things to know

If you receive Copilot access through a GitHub organization or enterprise, you cannot cancel the subscription yourself — speak to your organization admin to have your seat removed.
Students, teachers, and qualifying open-source maintainers with complimentary Copilot access do not have a paid plan to cancel.
After the billing cycle ends, your account downgrades to Copilot Free automatically, which includes limited completions per month.
